Study Abroad
UO participates in study abroad programs that provide students the opportunity to study in locations literally all over the world. Be sure to investigate the Global Education Oregon (GEO) website to learn about program details, the application process, finding scholarships to finance your international experience and more!
Why Study Abroad?
In addition to being a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the world while working toward your degree, international experience is an effective way to develop personal and professional skills that are essential for a successful transition into the workplace after college. Through study abroad, students can develop and effectively demonstrate a number of proficiencies, including the ability to:
- Value, respect, and learn from diverse cultures
- Demonstrate openness, inclusiveness, and sensitivity to different perspectives
- Adapt to diverse environments
When I study abroad, can I take courses toward my degree?
Short answer: Yes! Depending on the program you choose, study abroad can be a great way to:
- Earn Elective Credit
- Meet Second Language Requirements for a Bachelor of Arts Degree
- Earn credits that count toward your non-SOJC minor
- Earn credits that count toward your SOJC major*
*Any journalism/media courses taken through an abroad program accepted by the University of Oregon would transfer in as elective credit only. In order to substitute a study abroad J-course for a major or minor requirement, a petition to the Undergraduate Affairs Committee is required.
Can I do an internship abroad?
The GlobalWorks Internship program provides a number of internship opportunities abroad, customizing internship placement in the country and industry sector of your choice, with regular career coaching and mentorship to ensure a beneficial professional experience.
GlobalWorks also offers Virtual Internships, allowing to develop professional and intercultural skills without needing to travel.
