Getting Started

Searching for jobs and internships can feel overwhelming, but our student services team is here to support you. If you are beginning your job and internship search, check out these videos to help you understand how to get started, identify key search strategies, and create your own internship opportunities. Be sure to schedule a career advising appointment with SOJC Advising for additional support.

Research and Reflect

Before you open a browser tab, take some time to reflect on these questions to begin building a list of organizations you want to work for, roles you are interested in, or other factors that can help narrow your search. This videos covers essential steps to take before starting your search so you can make the most of your time.

Key Search Strategies

There are a several key strategies to use when job searching, and it is important to utilize a combination of them as you move through your search. Keep in mind, using a generic resume and cover letter and only applying to jobs online is not a great strategy. Be sure to tailor your professional materials to the specific position you are applying for and consider your connections.

Create Your Own Opportunity

You may find yourself in a position to create your own internship opportunity if you’re looking to build skills or have a particular cause or organization that you’re passionate about. In this video, we highlight ways to connect with an organization that might not have a formal internship program but could still benefit from your skills and contributions.

Additional Tips

If you have applied for a job or internship and know the application window has closed, you can reach out after two weeks to follow up on your application.

When applying to multiple positions at the same organization, be sure to submit tailored resume/cover letter to each positions unless the organization has stated otherwise.

Keep track of your job and internship search. Use a document or spreadsheet to keep track of what you applied for, when you applied, and other important information so that you can stay organized while you search.

Networking

Building relationships, or networking, is the process of creating genuine, mutually beneficial relationships with people who can help provide insight and guidance as you navigate your career journey. A strong network can help you learn more about different career paths, build your career confidence and ease your job search process as you look towards your first job post-graduation.
