Team Advising

A team of nine women stand outside Allen Hall on the University of Oregon campus.

The Student Success Center (“Team Advising”) provides comprehensive academic and career advising for undergraduates in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) at the University of Oregon. The hybrid mission of the center is based on a premise that student development and academic goal-setting are interlinked with career development and career goals. To serve one without the other is incongruent with a holistic approach to student services. The hybrid mission allows career and academic advising topics to permeate one-on-one meetings with students, group advising sessions, class presentations, workshops and program development. Each advisor also “shepherds” an in-house internship program in collaboration with a faculty member. Guided by our school’s vision of “Ethics, Innovation, Action,” Team Advising strives to provide efficient, high quality and innovative advising services. We continually push ourselves to improve, to learn from our mistakes and to always ask, “How can we improve our services?” We look forward, we move forward and we work to do better. The impact of having a hybrid academic and career advising center in one location is a tremendous service to our students. The professional advisors seamlessly meld career development and academic advising, guiding students to see the connection between day-to-day (short-term) decisions and long-term academic and career goals.
